How to save on your energy bills - with a rug!

Published in: 12 Apr 2023

Australians are no strangers to high power bills, particularly during the sweltering summer months. But did you know that rugs can be a great way to reduce your energy costs and insulate your home in the winter? By choosing the right rugs and placing them in the right places, you can help keep your house more insulated - all while saving money on your energy bills! Keep on top of the impending energy price hike, and let’s take a look at how you can use rugs to insulate your home.

Did you know that up to 20% of the heat in your home is lost through your floorboards? Rugs can be used as an effective form of insulation, helping to keep energy bills down. Insulating with rugs helps trap air and heat, providing extra warmth for your home as well as providing a cosy aesthetic. Placing rugs under furniture or in doorways can make an enormous difference, leading to savings on your power bill and a more comfortable living space all year round.

Choosing the Right Rug

When it comes to using rugs for insulation, not all rugs are created equal. In general, the thicker a rug is, the better it will be at trapping air and providing insulation. You should also consider materials; natural fibres like wool are great for insulation because they easily absorb heat. Consider investing in several good quality wool or cotton rugs if you want to maximise their insulating properties.

Placement Matters

Where you place your rug is just as important as what type of rug you choose. For best results, place large area rugs directly on top of hardwood or tile floors; this will help trap heat from escaping through these surface materials. A drafty hallway is a great spot to add a nice hall runner to complete the space.

Rug Care Tips

You’ll get the most out of your rugs if they’re well-maintained. Vacuum regularly (but not too often) using a low-powered suction setting so that it doesn’t damage delicate fibres like wool or silk, which are both excellent choices for insulation - this will ensure that dust mites don't accumulate and impair the insulation properties of your rug over time. Keep your rug looking its best by spot cleaning any spills immediately! Be sure to always read the care instructions on the back of your rug.

Earth Hour and Earth Day

It’s important to consider the environmental impact you have on the planet by using your heating and cooling more often than you perhaps should. Simple things like layering up, closing the windows and doors, and adding curtains to your windows are all simple ways to keep your house insulated without having to rely on ducted heating, and avoiding its emissions.

Using rugs for insulation is an inexpensive and easy way to save money on energy costs throughout our changing seasons - all without sacrificing style! Investing in high quality wool or cotton rugs that are thick and well-maintained can make all the difference when it comes to keeping your home cosy and comfortable no matter what time of year it is. With some simple tips on choosing the right rug, placement techniques, and proper upkeep, you can make sure that your power bills stay low by making use of this helpful household item!

Victorians - did you know about the $250 energy rebate?

Sorry to our out-of-Staters, but our Victorian friends have a bit of a leg up when it comes to energy bills.

The Victorian Government has an incentive program for customers to compare their energy providers on the energy compare website, and if you have an eligible energy account you are able to claim $250 just by comparing providers - no strings attached! With energy bills getting more and more expensive, every little bit counts.
