    Natural or Man-Made Fibres?

With so many materials to choose from, how do you know what kind of material is best for your rug's intended purpose? Rugs should not only look good, but they should also be comfortable to walk on. Certain materials will provide more comfort than others, but it also depends on the climate and where your rug will be placed. Consider where the rug will be placed and what requirements the rug needs to accommodate for and what your budget is.

Natural Fibres- Generally hand woven, in some cases Natural fibre rugs can be more costly than machine made rugs reflecting the time and attention to detail required.

Wool- Wool is a wonderful option to consider for area rugs that will be subjected to a lot of wear and tear. If your rug will be in a high-traffic area of the house, wool is a tough, long-lasting fibre. They're also naturally flame retardant, hypoallergenic, stain and odour resistant. These characteristics are especially beneficial if you have children or pets that are prone to accidents.

Cotton- Cotton is both attractive and comfortable underfoot. It's a versatile rug material that may be utilised in both the winter and summer months. It works nicely for dying different colours and more complex patterns. Cotton is a robust and soft fibre that is able to keep its form for a long time, however cotton rugs are best suited to lower traffic areas in the home as the fibres can show signs of wear earlier than other materials.

Jute- Jute rugs are made from plant fibres and are a cost-effective option for natural fibre rugs. It has a natural golden colour that complements most modern homes and may also be dyed. Jute is considered a strong, non-shed fibre good for child and pet friendly homes. To provide a softer surface, it can be woven with other materials. Regular vacuuming to eliminate dust and debris is generally all that is required. Because jute is absorbent, it is not recommended for wet or moist environments.

Man-made fibres- These rugs are a more affordable option. Yarn can be spun in many different ways to create various designs with different piles. These rugs are generally machine woven. Man-made Fibres are typically low maintenance and can be a great solution for kids and pet friendly homes.
